What is Microsoft Copilot Cowork?

Cowork is for handing Copilot a defined job rather than staying in a back-and-forth chat. It is powerful, but access, admin settings and usage-based billing matter.

What could Cowork do in an awarding organisation?

Examples include preparing a qualification review briefing from approved files and recent correspondence; assembling a first draft of a board pack; researching a regulatory change and producing a structured briefing; catching a manager up after leave; or preparing several connected outputs from the same approved sources. High-risk decisions still need human accountability.

Why might I not have Cowork?

Cowork has more dependencies than ordinary Chat.

    How to avoid unnecessary spend

Use Chat or in-app Copilot for small jobs. Use Cowork where the time saved justifies multi-step orchestration. Define the outcome clearly, point Cowork at the right sources, avoid repeated vague prompting, check the task cost where available, and make small finishing edits yourself rather than rerunning a whole task.
